My school's literacy team is creating R-E-A-D-O cards to send home at every grade level (1-5) to encourage summer reading. Prizes will be awarded in some way for filling the card. (This idea is still in the planning stages.)The team members worked on creating the cards and asked me to proof them. I think that the cards need more variation and wondered if anyone has anything or this type or knows of a similar idea that I could pass on to the team. The main thrust of the team is to improve literacy within our 90 minute reading block and extra hour of reading intervention time for those who need it. We have a three year grant and are heavily involved with phonics, the Voyager program and the Read Naturally program in addition to the reading series. The cards had general categories and specific authors, but I think that team members just sat down for a half hour to create them and just did them off the top of their heads, so to speak. I am going to make some suggestions, but am pressed for time due to a schoolwide expo that I am involved with until early May and thought that this idea might be out in LM_Net land somewhere (in some form.) I would personally prefer to have authors on the cards that have more readable text (I am thinking of the mysteries by Cynthia Rylant and I Can Read books, for example), instead of "popular" authors such as Marc Brown and Norman Bridwell that have been translated into TV shows or videos. But I could be on the wrong track...I just not have had the time to research this idea. I would appreciate any and all who could help. I will pass on your ideas to the team.
