I too would "close" the library to checkout the last two weeks of school. It
bothered me to not allow "checkout". Someone mentioned book swaps. I took the idea
and did a 1 for 1 paperback swap. The students could bring in a paperback and take
away a paperback. I seeded the table with freebies from Scholastic and classroom
libraries. It soothed my soul to have "checkout". The students (and parents)
thought it was great to get a new-to-them paperback.

I didn't do any book keeping. It was the honor system. I did go through daily and
pull "junk".
