I do inventory for these same reasons. I would add one other reason: inventory provides a record of every volume we own so that if there is some sort of catastrophe, we have a starting point for replacing damaged items and making insurance claims. However, I would never inventory while the library is open. Everyone is a teacher. ----Original Message Follows---- From: Laura Pearle <lpearle@GMAIL.COM> Reply-To: Laura Pearle <lpearle@GMAIL.COM> To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Subject: Re: [LM_NET] Why do I inventory Date: Fri, 21 Apr 2006 16:37:08 -0400 One of the reasons I do inventory is because we do not have a security system, and students (and parents, teachers, staff, etc.) can accidentally walk off with something. If no one looks for it between then and the next year, how do I know what's missing and needs to be reordered ASAP? I also get the opportunity to look at the books and assess their condition. Sometimes, books are used without being checked out and I don't know that they're falling apart. I can reshelve. I can recatalog. I can reacquaint myself with areas of the collection that were not heavily used that year. Is it a pain? Yes, it is. And perhaps it's not needed as often if you have a small collection. But with 30,000+ volumes, it's nice to really know what's there, what's not, and what should be.
