As a former professor of Library Science - concentrating on school
librarianship - allow me to respond-

I am forever grateful that I received a BLS as well - that we had 4 years to
do many hands-on activities - such as book repair, cataloging (hundreds of
books), book talking. circulation and weeding procedures.

Having had many student librarians doing their field work, I have noticed
that most have lots of philosophy but no idea of procedures - attendance,
study hall problems, behavior maintenance, etc.
