Hi all,

Our English 9 teachers just completed a project where 9th grade students
researched a person who acted as a "messenger to humanity." In other words a
person who had really made an impact on the world beyond a particular narrow
"talent" like sports. They tried to pick contemporary figures to keep the
students interested and some worked quite well, but others (Tiger Woods, for
example) really didn't fit the prescribed thesis. Next year we'd like to be
able to provide them with a better list of really remarkable people -
contemporary and historical- who both fit their thesis and are well enough
known to be research with some ease. Who better to get suggestions from than
all of you? Any ideas?

Thanks for your help.
