Hi! I guess I somehow missed the original question, but I have several great
biographies of women to recommend.

Mighty Jackie: The Strike Out Queen by Marissa Moss
This is about Jackie Mitchell, the last woman in our country's history to be
allowed to play professional baseball. She struck out both Babe Ruth and Lou
Gherig in an exhibition game and, thus, women are not allowed to play professional
baseball anymore.

Girls Think of Everything by Catherine Thimmesh
This is a collective biography about interesting things that were invented by
women. For instance, did you know that the chocolate chip cookie, the paper bag,
and windshield wipers were invented by women?

Girl Wonder: A Baseball Story in Nine Innings by Deborah Hopkinson
This is a picture book based on the biography of Alta Weiss, one of the first women
to play professional baseball. It is told in nine innings.

Best Wishes by Cynthia Rylant
This is the autobiography of children's and YA book author Cynthia Rylant.

These are the first ones that come to my mind. I always recommend these to my
girls (I work in a K-3 girls school). I especially recommend Mighty Jackie. I was
reading it to a class one day and the teacher, who was in the classroom, heard me
reading it and came running out to see what would happen. Everyone's response to
this book (adults) is I DIDN'T KNOW THAT! Kids just find it exciting. If you read
it out loud to a class, you must read or explain the information found in the
Afterward, or else the whole story just seems sweet and they don't realize what the
implications are for the current state of things with women in sports.

Okay, that's my 25 cents.

I don't have any suggestions as I do not know your curriculum or students. I
like to suggest reformers such as Sojourner Truth or Harriet Tubman but they
may know these names.

We usually do not let them do any sports or musical performers but ask the
students to stick with someone of more rigor. Perhaps, Barbara Jordan,
Barbara Bush, Janet Reno, Maya Angelou, Louisa May Alcott -- folks such as
these. Being a Roman Catholic school, we do many bios of Saints as well.

Recently some students did Emily Dickinson, Mary Todd Lincoln, Mary, Queen
of Scots, Anne rank, Hilary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Rosie O'Donnell, Susan
B. Anthony.
