It was a sad day for elementary library media specialists in Davenport
today. I believe it was back in the mid-90's when several of our elementary
schools had been cut back to having half-time media specialists. We had
worked our way back up to full-time media specialists in every building. But
today it was announced that ten schools (populations under 360) will be
sharing media specialists next year. That includes nine elementary schools
and the alternative high school. It was especially disappointing because we
thought the district must be committed to high quality media programs since
they had put in beautiful new media centers in most of our schools. I
understand that one of the arguments for the cuts was that Des Moines,
another large urban school, has no elementary media specialists. So, even
with the cuts, we're still better off than they are. How sad.
