I apologize if my response sounds a little patronizing -- not to the librarian
involved for sure -- but for the administrator who cannot think outside the box and
know that library skills prepare kids for research, for critical thinking, for
literacy, for computer applications, etc. etc. Yes, we
can get more specific for different particular careers, but the research shows that
kids nowadays might fulfill several different careers -- they have to be prepared
to face the technological world and make decisions about which steps to take.
Libraries are a continual resource for students and
older persons who need a variety of answers -- whether it's the next good book or a
website that will guide them into the next perfect job. We need to be teaching
kids how to evaluate resources, and how to use the information they are getting to
serve them in the best way possible. We also need
to advocate literacy in a variety of levels-- information is power! Tell your
principal that you are THE information specialist in a wide range of areas, and
that you there to serve your student population. Good luck!
