Please send me your information and advice as I sense a philosophical difference
may lead to tug-of-war in my collection development.

My district is zooming ahead into skills-driven reading instruction with
SuccessMaker technology and leveled readers being the foundation of reading
instruction in elementary schools. I anticipate that more and more of my library
budget will be redirected into purchasing and supporting these products instead of
maintaining our school collection.

Our state requires a full-time, certified LMS at every school, and that funds ($9
per child) be spent each year to maintain the collection purchasing books,
periodicals and software that becomes part of the media center collection as
circulating material.

  1. Do you catalog and keep leveled readers in your collection?

  2. Are leveled readers children's literature?

  3. Do you know of any authoratative persons whom I can quote when I advocate?

  4. How would you respond to this implied encroachment?

  5. Am I pushing an unnecessary panic button?

Thanks for helping me collect my thoughts. I am a literature-rich teacher myself
who idolizes great teachers like Judy Freeman, Stephen Krashen, Keith Lance, Esme
Codell, David Loerstcher and Jonathan Kozol. My goal is to provide good books and
the desire to read, and I'll be sad if my library skills are relegated to
supporting controlled-language bleck.

I'll post a hit of responses directly to me, but I think this might generate
another good online discussion.
