Thank you so much! You guys are great and have given me a place to start
my search. I had several requests for a HIT, so the responses are below.

I have seen them at Office Depot. You can probably get them online
also, perhaps from Quill or Office Depot.

My friend has a long string of bells on leather (sort of like a harness
for horses or something like that) on her door. I've seen things
hanging from the doorknob or from the top of the door itself with the
right (skinny) apparatus.

Not sure of your price range, but some interesting choices at above
online site.

==============================

Just an idea - installing a chime would work - they can be purchased at
Lowes or probably any hardware store.

==============================

We use the type of bells they sell at Christmas for doors. The ones we have
look like a clump of grapes but are really big bells glued together. They
have a loop that fits over the door handle. When anyone goes in or out, we
know about it right away.

This site has a shopkeeper's bell.

==============================

I strung up several large "jingle" type bells on each door. It has worked fairly
well. But I don't have teachers interfering with my "warning"
system!
Good luck!

Possibly you could spray the hinge with Fantastic or some such cleaner which would
clean out the lubricant the custodian applied.

I attached a string of sleigh bells to the door in our old library, for just
that reason!
