Hi Sheila,
Your teacher is correct in her thought process that if it says "Works Cited"
at the top, the list should contain only works CITED in the paper. MLA says the
broader terminology to be used if the list contains more than just the works that
were cited is Works Consulted.

     MLA says (p 144-145):
As the heading Works Cited indicates, the list contains all the works that you
will cite in your text.... <snip>.... Other names for such a listing are
Bibliography (literally, "description of books") and Literature Cited. Usually,
however, the broader title Works Cited is most appropriate, since research papers
often draw not only on books and articles, but also on films, recordings,
television programs, and other nonprint sources.
Titles used for other kinds of source lists include Annotated Bibliography,
Works Consulted, and Selected Bibliography. An annotated bibliography, also called
Annotated List of Works Cited, contains descriptive or evaluative comments on the
sources..."

So I think your teacher is looking for Works Consulted, instead of Works Cited.

Subject: bibliogrphy vs. works cited

Hello,

This is my first posting so I hope it is correct. I was working with a group of
teachers using Noodletools and when the students go to print the bibliographies it
states "Works Cited" at the top of the page. One teacher asked me if it should say
"Bibliography" instead as she always thought that works cited had to be
specifically cited in the paper, as opposed to just sources that one has used. I
have been out of school libraries for a few years and could not clearly recall. TIA
