One of the important areas to address that I would add to the list of topics for this girls' bibliotherapy book group is perfectionism, as it affects so many other areas. Not just girls, but all teens (and all people, of course) need to realize that they do not have to be perfect. Girls, in particular, let this misguided notion of perfectionism affect their lives--body image, clothes, friends, boyfriends--which can result in serious image problems and depression. I've had some experience with teens and this perfectionism demon, so I apologize if I sound as if I'm on a soapbox. Some nonfiction books that could prove useful for the problem of perfectionism (and they address other issues, too) are Perfectionism:What's Bad About Being Too Good by Miriam Adderholdt and Jan Goldberg, Reviving Ophelia:Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls by Mary Pipher, Ophelia Speaks by Sara Shandler, Odd Girl Out and Odd Girl Speaks Out by Rachel Simmons. Fiction titles in this area could inclu! de Scott Westerfield's series, which includes the trilogy titles Uglies, Pretties, and Specials. Also, Sarah Dessen's Just Listen deals with putting up an appearance as opposed to dealing with the sometimes ugly truth or issues. In the dating subject area, Sarah Dessen again has numerous books that could be used. Also to consider are Forever by Judy Blume, What My Mother Doesn't Know by Sonya Sones, The Boyfriend List by E. Lockhart, ttfn by Lauren Myracle, and Nick & Nora's Infinite Playlist by Racel Cohn and David Levithan (might want to check the language on this one for your group). Meg Cabot's titles seem to be popular with teen girls, too.
