I created terrible PowerPoint up, with examples of all the things I
want them to avoid. As I show it to them, I stop after each slide and
ask them what their reaction is to it. It works pretty well.

Edward Tufte's work on PowerPoint is excellent. Check out an example:

He speaks frequently - definitely worth checking out.
This isn't 5th grade stuff but makes points we should all consider
when teaching students to do presentations.
