Hi, folks.

My original question: I was looking for non-fiction on cooking, food & drink, and
for any recommendations anyone might have on excellent adult non-fiction.

The replies:
Thanks to Donna who reminded me about ALA’s Notable books for adults: go to
www.ala.org. Choose Awards and Scholarships at the top, and then choose Books and
Media Awards in the left frame, and then scroll down to “Notable Books for
Adults.”

Several people recommended David McCullough and Bill Bryson as superb non-fiction
writers.
