Last week I had all the Juniors in for research for their big Chem./English project. I had thought to caution them about using Wikipedia- but then had an idea - Instead of telling them not to use it I explained to each class the problems and concerns so many of you have expressed recently. Then I told them to go ahead and use it but to be sure to verify any information they found by also going to other more authoritative sites. As they were working, I walked around to help where I could and actually heard some of them reminding their group members to be sure to check the info before adding it to the Works Cited listing. Great - guess sometimes they are listening, after all. Also, whey not use Wikipedia the same way we do when we teach how to evaluate a website? - It would make a good lesson in verifying information found.
