Speaking of scary books...I was surprised how haunting is Zilpha Keatley
Snyder's story, THE UNSEEN. The catalog description is as follows:
"Feeling angry and out-of-place in her large family, twelve-year-old
Xandra finds a magical key to a world of ghostly, sometimes frightening,
phantoms that help her see herself and her siblings more clearly." It is
so well seen and the everyday life of Xandra so ordinary that the horror
element just creeps up on the reader making it very believable. Many 5th
and 6th graders will also identify with Xandra's aggravation with her
family.
