Thanks to everyone who took the time to send me ideas for a focus or
theme for a new unit on modern Europe for third grade. Here are the
suggestions I received:

Suggestions for a focus / theme for the unit:

What about finding some famous people from each country, making a mask
and having a "dinner party". They would need things to talk about in
their country and could share information that way.

Penpals in various European cities (also works on those letter writing
skills)

Student created skits about life in a European city.

Students could create a travel itenerary for a trip through a particular
city. They could go into detail about places to visit, types of food to
eat, currency exchange, price of various items.

Looking at the country through its folktales is a good idea. Maybe even
have the kiddos write folktales.

How about following different versions of some favorite folktales? You
could find the countries on the map. Sometimes you can find some
changes that reflect the culture in which they are being told. There's
lots of material on "Cinderella".
