Hi folks,

I did a couple of things last year that really really helped focus my
weeding and got me some sympathy money from my PTSA and Booster Club!

1) I utilized a collection analysis tool to evaluate the AGE of my
collection. I used Follett's Titlewise, but Macklin has one as well. Not
sure about B & T or other book jobbers. This gave me a breakout of
copyright dates by decades and man was that scary!!!!

2) I sorted by automated catalog by the copyright date and started with
the very very oldest (1900-1910 - YIKES) and worked through the decades.
If something was a classic - I looked at condition and if it had ever been
checked out. To date I have worked through the 1980's! That's pretty good
for a collection of 17,000 plus!

3) I also used the pitiful state of current materials to convince my
PTSA and Booster club to donate $$$$ to upgrade my Science/Technology and
Computer books (we have some techie types in both groups!) I made sure
that they got a copy of the report from Follett and lists of possible
purchases when I made my plea for $$. Managed to get $1000 from the two
groups last year and another $1000 from Booster Club this year.

As for when I weeded - it was as time allowed. In the HS setting there is a
real ebb and flow of library use by classes so whenever I had both time and
cart space we'd peal off a copyright date range and go for it.

The job is nowhere near completed - it never is! But I feel much better
about my collection and about my ordering choices - particularly in
non-fiction areas that I'm not an expert in (Sciences!!!).

Hope this will give some an idea or two

Subject: [LM_NET] Techniques Used in Weeding?

I have a great list of reasons TO WEED titles from the library and I'm
presenting a workshop on "The Need to Weed" in a few weeks. I was just
wondering, however, if there were any techniques that any of you used TO
weed? In other words, do you find that you close the library to weed as you
take inventory? Do you weed throughout the year and choose specific
sections to concentrate on each year? Do you weed based upon the subjects
being taught heavily (so you can have more up-to-date materials added)?

I'm interested in any specific techniques you might use AND any special
problems that you've found while weeding (in other words, do you find
teachers who panic when they see the "weeded titles" piled on your carts?
do you give them the old titles? do you pretend to return the title and
then pull it later?)

I think the comical "relief" that you can offer in this "serious topic" can
help to make this more interesting.

You may respond to me off-list!

Thanks~
