I want to thank everyone who sent me the great suggestions. I promised I would post a HIT so here is the list of book titles that were suggested. Other books I loved to read with my students at this age level are Loser, The Lemony Snicket's series is another wonderful one-lots of rich vocabulary and description, Island of the Blue Dolphins-then compare it to Abel's Island, Bridge to Terabithia, and last but not leaset, There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom (my favorite) I had a successful experience with Among the Hidden, by Margaret Peterson Haddix. You could also try other books by her, such as Running Out of Time. I'm rereading Roll of thunder, Hear my cry. Coraline (Gaiman), Kensuke's Kingdom (Morpurgo), Skeleton Man (Buchac), The Beloved Dearly (Cooney), Runt (author?), Running Out of Time (Haddix), Among the Hidden (Haddix), Regarding the Fountain (Klise), Hoot (Hiaasen), and Loser (Spinelli) Louise Erdrich's BIRCHBARK HOUSE Axle Galench Series?
