Hello,
If a book is passed on to another school or facility as an
insult to their race or socio-economic status, that is one thing. If it
is passed on because it is no longer suitable to the collection of a
particular library, then it becomes a gift. Books that have dated
information need to be treated cautiously on a book by book basis. At a
certain point, many of these books have historic value. My brother
acquired The Canals of Mars by Percival Lowell (pub. 1908) as a discard
from our local library. I shouldn't be on a library shelf, but what a
valuable document. I'm always looking for books on forestry and the
environment from years ago. They often may have data that is no longer
available or is buried in some archive.

Some of the most treasured books of my personal collection came
from the Open Door Mission, the Salvation Army or yard sales. I have
battered paperbacks that are actually quite valuable because they are no
longer in print.

Deliver us from well-meaning parents!

One charming parent wants to hit the local Goodwill to buy children's
books for the library!. Now, not that I don't do that myself for
replacement copies of popular fiction, but...large scale, no. I
explained
to the principal all would have to be cataloged. "We could get
someone."
"No, not just 'someone' but a credentialed someone." Apparently she is
working with several other schools in St. Paul as well as Rondo.

Why don't we just get a budget to buy books?!

Leslie
