I need some help. My shelves have some lovely blue plastic signs with white writing indicating the appropriate Dewey section (i.e. 800 Literature). They are approximately 1 1/2 - 2" x 9". Due to space issues, I've had to shift all of the books so now the signs are no longer in the right places. They wer e purchased long before I came, so I have no idea exactly what was used to stick them on although they are very secure. I've asked my custodian about removing them, but she and her boss insist that it is impossible to do without damaging the wooden bookshelves. I don't want to have misleading signage, so I need some suggestions. What can I do to remove the signage? What can I do to remove any residual adhesive on the wooden shelves? Is there something that could be used to securely reattach the labels in the right places and yet won't create a lot of work in the future if these need to be moved again in a few years?
