Dear LM_NET,

Here is something that has been recommended, if you are attending the ALA
Conference in New Orleans this month (from Scholastic Publishers).

----------------------------------------------
On behalf of Scholastic and the American Association of School Libraries,
I am pleased to invite you to School Libraries Work: Rebuilding for
Learning, a forum to be held on Monday, June 26th from 1:30 to 3:00 pm at
ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans.

Everyone knows that last year’s hurricane season caused catastrophic
destruction of school libraries in Gulf Coast communities; meaning the
loss of the learning and information hubs of those schools. Invaluable
book and material collections, irreplaceable school and community
artifacts, and school information technology centers have all been lost.
For many children, especially low-income children from the region, the
loss of the school library has meant the loss of their primary access
point for books and exposure to-and practice with-electronic information
resources.

The fate of school library recovery is largely unknown. Despite evidence
of the importance of school libraries, many school districts may not make
school library restoration a priority and some will neglect restoration
altogether, particularly given the considerable financial and staffing
strains experienced by districts in the region. There is an urgent need
and real opportunity to reexamine the current state of school libraries
and the role they play in fostering reading and learning, particularly in
the Gulf Coast region, as districts look not just to rebuild but to reform
schools. This is the moment to convey how effective libraries facilitate
literacy and learning and to explore the true potential for libraries to
be vital learning centers for schools and their surrounding communities.

Moderated by NBC News Weekend Today Show anchor Lester Holt, School
Libraries Work: Rebuilding for Learning, explores the role of school
libraries in the context of learning and total school and community
recovery. Roundtable panelists and participants will examine research and
theory around how school libraries are optimally used as educational
centers within the school community. Participants will discuss how
successful school libraries cultivate 21st Century learning skills. They
will also explore ways in which libraries serve as agents of school
recovery following disasters or crisis situations.

Keynote Speaker: Mrs. Laura Bush (invited)

Panelists: Keith Curry Lance, Ph.D. Director, Library Research Service.
Colorado State Library Laura Bush Foundation grant recipients Dr. Norman
Francis, President, Xavier University Linda Williams, President, American
Association of School Librarians

When: Monday, June 26, 1:30-3:00 p.m.
            New Orleans Convention Center
