The Long Island Coalition Against Censorship is an association of 22 educational and community organizations (17 of which are libraries and professional library organizations) have joined together to combat censorship in libraries and classrooms. In planning an exhibit for Banned Books week in late September or another time of the school year, you may wish to consider the 2006-7 edition of the exhibit, Censorship in Schools and Libraries available from the Long Island Coalition Against Censorship. The exhibit presents 30 illustrations of censorship each one approximately 11" x 14" with accompanying detailed textual information that is 11" x 14." The history of censorship in public schools and libraries highlights incidents of censorship that have occurred in the United States during the last 150 years. Included are descriptions of the censorship of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, In the Night Kitchen, The Catcher in the Rye, and the novels of Judy Blume and Robert Cormier. U.S. Supreme Court decisions and lower court decisions regarding censorship are an integral part of the exhibit. The new edition includes continuing efforts to censor the popular Harry Potter books. (A few years ago, Harry Potter books were burned in Alamogordo, New Mexico), and renewed efforts in a number of states to challenge the significance of evolution in science classes by introducing "intelligent design." In addition to new incidents of censorship, there is an updating of cases that have occurred since 1990. Quality copies of the exhibit have been reproduced which may be readily presented on poster or bulletin boards in libraries or classrooms and retained by you as resource material. If space is limited, we suggest that you rotate the cases during the time the exhibit is on display. Excerpts from the exhibit may be seen on our web site www.the-licac.org <http://www.the-licac.org/> . Click on Exhibits, "Censorship In Schools and Libraries" and excerpts. The cost of the exhibit (including mailing charges) is $38.00 postpaid by check or money order. You may order the exhibit by sending an e-mail to coalcen@juno.com or a purchase order to the Long Island Coalition Against Censorship, PO Box 296, Port Washington, N.Y. 11050.
