Dear LM_NET Colleague,

We have had to reject many, many messages sent for posting recently as
well change individual LM_NET member settings to the REVIEW status. The
review status means that your message sits in the REVIEW queue until the
LM_NET Moderator me) approves it-- and unless your ID is COMPLETELY
included, it will probably NOT be approved. Instead it will be sent back
to you for reposting with complete ID. Here is some information on what is
expected of those who post to LM_NET, in terms of ID.

LM_NET has adopted a policy of required identification within all
messages posted to LM_NET. Please observe the habit of including
identification in all messages posted to LM_NET. You should be sure to
include your:

1. Name 2. Occupation/Job Title/Worksite 3. e-mail address
  Example:

  Jo Booksworth, Librarian
  Best Elementary, Bestville, CA
  JBOOKSWORTH@BEST.K12.CA.US

REASONS (in addition to common courtesy):

The address at the top of the header doesn't identify if the person is
supposed to be on LM_NET (i.e., school librarian or related type). If a
person does not belong on LM_NET, and posts inappropriate questions, it
gives us a way to know if we should filter them out.

Also, due to characteristics of their e-mail software, many people don't
see the person's return address in their e-mail header, so they must
unnecessarily reply to the entire group.

With thousands of members, and 70+ messages a day being posted, we can't
afford to have many inappropriate messages posted, especially from those
who are not in our intended audience.

Here are some of the most important reasons that LM_NET members have
come up with as to why it is important to have a complete ID (signature)
in one's e-mail when posting to LM_NET:

Gives a context for your e-mail (e.g., a high school setting vs. K-2).
Some of the questions are generic for any grade level, but others are
geared more to elementary or secondary.

Lets people know some basic "professional" things about you.

Identifies you as a member of a profession or specialty.

Shows pride in the profession and services you provide.

Shows pride in the work you do and where you do it.

Allows people to more easily communicate with you by e-mail.

"Advertises" and promotes school library service.

Posting with no ID is similar to receiving information out-of-context
when you have no point of reference for who has posted the information.

Other members of LM_NET are able to see what state/country is giving
them all this wonderful advice! Conditions vary in different areas and it
is good to know where you are coming from.

And how many of us have seen announcements about jobs, lost books,
meetings or other geographically sensitive messages with no indication of
what state they were from?

It identifies grade level. High school information will not necessarily
be good for K-5.

Often times a request is made for information for a book or subject and
the poster forgets to indicate what age/grade level that for which it is
to be used. If it is in your signature, then people will know.

Some people don't open messages with no subject line due to
spam/viruses.

It also gives mail recipients a way to verify that you really exist -
somewhat like some of the reasons that I give students for requiring
citations (so the teacher can verify your source).

Makes people take responsibility for their posts. (One does tend to
think a bit more about it when it is signed).

Thank you for your support, cooperation and participation!
