Here is my original request: A fifth grade teacher in my building is going to work with 6th and 7th grade gifted students next year in the Middle School. Here is her request: "I am looking for books for high ability 6th and 7th graders. I would love to use some contemporary authors and some more classical ones too. I would probably be using it for examining symbolism as well as how the author's time period effected what was written. I know that 6th grade social studies is going to be focusing on the Eastern Hemisphere- so ties to Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia would probably be done at some time as well. I have heard them talk specifically about Asia-- it's being written this summer." These are the replies: 1) I suggest including a book by Pearl Buck 2) You might try these: Laurence Yep, Dragon's Gate Ji-li Jiang, Red Scarf Girl Lian Hearn, Across the Nightingale Floor Madeleine L'Engle, A Swiftly Tilting Planet Tanith Lee, Claidi series Joseph Bruchac, Code Talker Scott O'Dell, Island of the Blue Dolphins Bryce Courtenay, The Power of One 3) Have you looked at the ALA YASLA award winners? I always use them, and think that they are wonderful. I have copied the awards that are listed on the site -- go to www.ala.org, and then to the YASLA site. I have found a wealth of good books, great resources, and a wide variety of reads. Right now, I am reading all of the Margaret A Edwards Award winners for the past few years. The Edwards award is for a collection of work by one author. Alex Awards Best Books for Young Adults Great Graphic Novels for Teens Margaret A. Edwards Award Printz, Michael L. Award Outstanding Books for the College Bound Popular Paperbacks for Young Adults Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult Readers Thanks for your suggestions.
