I am posting this is a series of posts. I hope I do it correctly. Songs, games, and chants for the Library: Hit I I. Materials that can be purchased: One book I use all the time is I'm a Little Teapot http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0969866607/qid=1151602657/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2 /102-6456026-4632936?s=books&v=glance&n=283155 It's a thick collection of songs and finger plays arranged by subject (Farms, Halloween etc) and also includes some book suggestions. You can get it from Amazon for about $15. Judy Freemans's book is equally wonderful. Jean: Good luck. Glad you got so many nice ideas. I am an LMS in two schools: Grades 1 & 2 in one school and PreK-K in the other. This past year I began every lesson with "The Library Song." All 4 grades loved it and welcomed the same introduction to each class, sort of like the theme song for their favorite television program. I can play guitar a little bit, so I accompanied the song on the guitar which helped to keep them focused and engaged. Believe it or not, I didn't get sick of it either, amazing since I taught 35 classes a week. (Don't ask, but this coming year I will split my time between the schools, by doing one week at each, and will have 22 and 17 classes a week). The song came from one of those teacher magazines, maybe Mailbox, and it called for the tune to "Pussycat, Pussycat." I didn't care for that, and also decided to shorten it. So here is my version, sung to the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" --- Library, library, what's on the shelf? All kinds of books I can read by myself. Library, library, what do I see? Lots of good books I can check out for free. Library, library, you're what I need. A place I can visit, to learn and to read. I have a lot of songs in my little book that I've gathered over the years. Many go along with a theme, like the Applesauce Song, sung to the tune of Yankee Doodle: Peel an apple, cut it up, put it in a pot, When you cook it you will find, It's applesauce you've got. Many of these kinds of songs can be found in books for Storytimes. OR, on the web at sites like: http://www.geocities.com/mystorytime/themes.htm Enjoy your summer. In addition to Freeman's "Author song" (sung to the >tune of "Farmer in the Dell") and her FICTION cheer, I use a song to help >each class remember what day is Library day. It is like this: > >Sing to the tune of "Popeye the Sailor Man" and substitute any day of the >week for Monday. > >Monday is library day (clap, clap), >Monday is library day (clap, clap), >We bring back our old books and check out some new books, >'Cause Monday is Library day (clap, clap). > >Mary Flanagan, Librarian >Chandler School >93 Chandler Street >Duxbury, MA 02332 >mcflanagan@adelphia.net >781-934-7680 >From: "Martha Arrington" <marrington10@hotmail.com> >To: jpacheco44@HOTMAIL.COM >Subject: RE: Songs, Chants, Games >Date: Wed, 28 Jun 2006 22:40:44 -0400 > >Jean: >Here are two that I use. You might try the archives and see if it comes up. We had a intern who used it w/the kindergarten kids to teach them how to use the shelf markers when selecting books. Judy Beahan, LMS Griswold Elementary School 303 Slater Avenue Griswold, CT 06351 jfinucan@griswold.k12.ct.us Judy suggested the archives. I found it very easily at the archives by typing in Shelf Marker Hokey Pokey.
