Hello All- I am celebrating an early Poetry Month with a lesson on Edward Lear poetry for my First and Second graders. We discuss what poetry is and then I read the poem, "A was once an apple pie" from the Complete Nonsense Book by Lear. My version has few illustrations so I don't share them with the class. Then I read the beautifully illustrated version of A Was Once An Apple Pie adapted and illustrated by Suze Macdonald. We compare the two and discuss lines like: "A was once an apple pie, / Pidy / Widy / Tidy / Pidy / Nice insidy / Apple pie." The classes have been enjoying it. Some children have agreed that Lear's work is funny even without the vivid illustrations that Macdonald uses. ****************************************************** Josephine G. Dervan.
