Hello,

There have been three recent cover stories in the news
magazines concerning youth. I wanted to list them for you:

"The Multi-Tasking Generation" by Claudia Williams. Time. March 27,
2006. pp. 48-56. I was very impressed with this one. It tied in very
well with my Information Ethics Unit. The picture of a "tween" girl
with a Nintendo DS, a cell phone, a pager and an iPod was a great
illustration for the next generation, genM. It covered some of the
impact of how college instructors are having problems with their
incoming students.

"The New Wisdom of the Web" by Steven Levy and Brad Stone. Newsweek.
April 3, 2006. pp. 47-54. This was a great update on the social
networking sites except that it did not cover the controversies being
generated by this new Internet phenomenon or the impact that it is
having on youth. The article included a great "Test Your Geek Chic"
quiz.

"Dropout Nation" by Nathan Thornburgh. Time. April 17, 2006. pp.
30-40. About 30% of our students never graduate from high school. The
article focuses on the efforts of the Shelbyville (IN) High School to
reverse this statistic. It includes a list of five things that help
students from dropping out early.

"Any way you look at it, the more we expand libraries,

the less we'll expand prisons. Thanks to my mom and

the Chicago Public Library, I'm a writer now."
