Greetings!

My name is Marilyn McCroskey, and I represent AASL on the CIP
(Cataloging-in-Publication) Advisory Group to the Library of Congress
(LC). I have been asked to provide information to LC about the value of
CIP to my constituency (school librarians) and ask what you might need
from CIP in the future. When the CIP Advisory Group meets at ALA in
June, this information will be part of a larger discussion on the nature
and future of CIP. This is your chance to tell LC what kind of
cataloging information school librarians need. Please complete and
return the survey directly to Marilyn McCroskey, not to the list, at
MarilynMcCroskey@missouristate.edu PLEASE RESPOND BY MAY 15, 2006.

The LC CIP program began in 1971 to provide libraries with a preliminary
cataloging record for a book when it is received. Before a book is
published, at the request of the publisher, LC creates a catalog record
(the CIP block) to be printed on the copyright page of the book. The CIP
block does not include publisher's data or physical description, but
does include the other elements of a catalog record, including subject
headings and Dewey classification number. Subject headings are Library
of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), and for juvenile materials LC
juvenile Annotated Card (AC) headings are added in brackets. The same
CIP record will appear in MARC format in the LC online catalog and other
databases that include LC cataloging records. When LC receives a copy of
the book, LC updates the MARC CIP. School libraries obtain these MARC
records with new books or by searching for cataloging data in OCLC and
other databases.

In addition to the CIP questions, I have also included some questions on
your use of subject headings. This information may be useful to library
educators, as well as to the Library of Congress. Some of the
information gathered in this survey might be included in a future
journal article on CIP and/or on subject headings used in schools.

The following survey was constructed as part of a research project at
Missouri State University. Your responses to the survey will remain
anonymous, although written comments might be quoted without names. Omit
questions that you do not wish to answer, though full responses would be
helpful. There are no known risks for participating in this survey. The
act of responding to the survey will mean that you have read the
foregoing informed consent statement, and your response implies informed
consent to use the data.

Please note: The Library of Congress will also be doing an online survey
on CIP in the near future. It is important to respond to that survey as
well as this one, as the LC survey will be very influential in shaping
the future of the CIP program. As soon as the LC survey is ready for
access, I will post a message to the list.
