A while ago I posted a target about what books from the best books lists from this year were appropriate for middle school. Herešs the information I received. I was not surprised, the titles that showed up were ones I was familiar with. Thanks for those who replied!! ***** Below is a list of the titles from the list that I have in my library; I've read each book EXCEPT Balefire, which was donated to my school and my students enjoy (has reviews appropriate to MS) and Raven's Gate (1st in new series by Anthony Horowitz. (These are from the 2006 list) Queen Bee (a graphic novel) Valiant Blonde Ambition (an A-List book; each book seems to get more "mature"...) Runner (set in Seattle so my kids love it) Bang! Something Girl (from the Orca Soundings series http://www.orcabook.com/SoundingsFrame.htm which is an OUTSTANDING series for lower-level readers--abt 90 pages each, AR level 3.5-4.5, on topics which are of interest to our students. I can't keep them on the shelf! I DO NOT recommend Charmed which is also on the list as it is abt prostitution) Ranger's Apprentice Flush Scorpia Maximum Ride The Traces series. **** Below are the books that I have read or students of mine have read: Black, Holly. Valiant: a Modern Tale of Faerie. Simon & Schuster, 2005. 0-689-86822-7. I liked this less than Tithe, but both belong in high school due to some intense scenes and situations. Deuker, Carl. Runner. Houghton Mifflin, 2005. 0-618-54298-1. I love Carl Deuker. This book hasn't been on the shelf since I booktalked it. Combo sports/ mystery. Very suspensefull Flanagan, John. Rangeršs Apprentice: Book One: The Ruins of Gorlan. Philomel/Putnam, 2005. 0-399-24454-9. A fifth grader read this and recommended it. He borrowed it from the public library. Hiaasen, Carl. Flush. Random House, 2005. 0-375-92182-6. Very good, a bit more mature than Flush due to some scenes, violence, gambling. I have it on my 6-8 grade shelf. (I am K-8) Horowitz, Anthony. Ravenšs Gate. Scholastic, 2005. 0-439-67995-8. Horowitz, Anthony. Scorpia. Philomel, 2005. 0-399-24151-5. Horowitz is the perfect author for middle school boys Scorpia (and the Alex Rider books) are James Bond without the sex. Raven's Gate is the beginning of a five book series and I read it in one sitting. Mayer, Melody. The Nannies. Delacorte, 2005. 0-385-73283-X. Several of my reading eighth graders read this and love the books but tell me too edgy for our school library. Patterson, James. Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment. Little, Brown, 2005. 0-316-15556-X. Highly recommended by an eighth grade boy. Shan, Darren. Lord Loss. Little, Brown, 2005. 0-316-11499-5. If this is part of the Cirque du freak series, probably ok. It's horror, campy, occasionally excessively violent. I purchased only the first five. I have about five die-hard fans who are eighth grade boys. Shusterman, Neal. Dread Locks: Dark Fusion, Book One. Dutton, 2005. 0-525-47554-0. Shusterman, Neal. Red Rideršs Hood: Dark Fusion, Book Two. Dutton, 2005. 0-525-47562-1. REad Dread locks a while ago and didn't put it on the shelf but can't really remember why. Just started Red Rider. Sloan, Brian. A Really Nice Prom Mess. Simon & Schuster, 2005. 0-689-87438-3. Definitely high school although I am only a few chapters into it. The cover alone will have hormonal boys a quiver. *** NONFICTION **Cosmo Girl Quiz Book: Discover Your Personality.
