Does anyone have any data or professional articles on the benefits of letting
students have wide variety and choice for summer reading?

We have pushed for two years to get mandatory summer reading, but our former
administrator was against it. We are getting a new principal and she wants to make
summer reading mandatory for ALL students (YAY), but she suggests limiting the
choices to a few literary titles. We are finally getting these kids to enjoy
reading...we don't want to turn them off again by requiring classics for summer
(again I'm taking about ALL students, now, not AP and honors).

Suggestions, links would be appreciated!
