School Library Journal just published a supplement on "summer reading"--- it's in the Curriculum Connections supplement (Spring 2006). You might check online to see if you can access it, if you don't have it in print. The entire supplement is about "summer reading"....and how we can encourage it or kill it! ~Shonda Shonda Brisco, MLIS US / Technology Librarian 4200 Country Day Lane Fort Worth Country Day School Fort Worth, TX 817.732.7718 ext. 339 "We can't wait for somebody outside of ourselves to rescue us, because nobody is coming to the rescue..." ~ Ross Todd, Professor School of Communications, Information, and Library Studies, Rutgers University sbrisco@fwcds.org http://www.fwcds.org/campus/libraries/default.asp >>> "Armatti, Cayla - Lake Weir High" <Cayla.Armatti@MARION.K12.FL.US> 05/02/06 >12:18 PM >>> Does anyone have any data or professional articles on the benefits of letting students have wide variety and choice for summer reading? We have pushed for two years to get mandatory summer reading, but our former administrator was against it. We are getting a new principal and she wants to make summer reading mandatory for ALL students (YAY), but she suggests limiting the choices to a few literary titles. We are finally getting these kids to enjoy reading...we don't want to turn them off again by requiring classics for summer (again I'm taking about ALL students, now, not AP and honors). Suggestions, links would be appreciated!
