I appreciated Laura Pearle's perceptive comment on this issue:

"One thing I've noticed is that this whole issue of gaming and MySpace
use, etc., seems to be taking on the aura of IMPERATIVE."

Isn't that the truth? Having a wide range of high-interest offerings
available through our school libraries in both physical and electronic
form is a noble aim but DO WE HAVE TO TRY AND CO-OPT EVERYTHING?!

I mean, let's see...what are kids really into now? OH! Around here
there's been an enthusiastic increase among early teens in the use of
dangerous household chemicals as intoxicating inhalents. Hmmnnn. Maybe I
could harness this nascent adolescent interest for educational
purposes... I'll have a banner made: 'Your Library: It's a gas!' Or
maybe 'Come Huff with Us!'

Would it be trying too hard if I offered a free can of Reddi-Whip with
every third item checked out?

Seriously, though. I think our profession has to check its own
synecdochical tendencies, especially in the electronica department. You
can't --and shouldn't try to-- embrace all things.
