Dear friends - I had to let you know what a fabulous time I had last week at Judy Freeman's Winners. I bought most of the top books she talked about. And I'm using three of them this week for my lessons. I bought 10 Little Rubber Ducks. Over the weekend I even found some real rubber ducks. They are on my desk. I made color copies of the ducks on the front cover and cut them apart. Today I read the book with some first graders. We talked about all the things the little ducks might run into. Then I gave them each a copied duck and they drew a picture around it. We taped the duck on the picture and I wrote "We read 10 Little Rubber Ducks" with a marker at the bottom. So cute. Of course the ducks saw jelly fish and whales and sting rays. One duck ran into a submarine! With the second graders I am using Prehistoric Actual Size. I got out one Judy introduced us to last year, Actual size. We read thru both, using a ruler to check the measurements, and then I challenged the kids to do their own Actual Size pictures. It helps to emphasize the words, Ac-tu-al Size. I say it in a funny low voice. The kids had fun taking off their shoes and tracing their feet. Of course, when one does it they all have to! And then we practice measuring. The third graders got to see Traction Man. Of course I got out my Nancy Pearl, and my Arthur family, and Curious George on a parachute and a rubber duck. We make believe an interesting rescue situation and then I read the book using a funny voice like a news reporter. I traced Traction Man in his green suit - just the outline - and gave each kid a copy and asked them to put TM in a situation and design an outfit for him. I now have a bulletin board of TM in camouflage, as an army sergeant, and FBI agent, and a karate expert. Too funny. Next week I am going to pick out three more books and do more reading and drawing. The kids love it, I love it, and I can't wait to see what's new next year! If you are looking for a great workshop to go to put Judy Freeman on your list! www.judylovesbooks.com Thanks again!
