A local afterschool program has been allowing students to spend their time on Club Penguin. A teacher/parent has been very alarmed by a 10 year old who is apparently developing a friendship with a girl he met there. I visited the site and see that it is a child's version of adult role-playing games. It was easy for me to create a character and join the ranks of the (presumably) younger, elementary school players. Everyone has a penguin character, they travel the world, purchase items, and chat with players. It is supposedly carefully monitored. Does anyone have any experience with this particular site and the safety of it? Also, what are your thoughts on the appropriateness of time spent by younger students in these virtual worlds and chat rooms? I'm used to dealing with myspace-type issues with teens at the high school, but this program is targeting much younger students and brings up even more concerns. I'd appreciate your comments.
