Hi, Everyone, I have a student who has been assigned to read The Color Purple by Alice Walker, but because of the student's personal beliefs, he would like to substitute a book with similar themes but one that does not have any sexually explicit passages. His teacher is requiring that the book be by an African American female author. I'm stumped. Every other book I can think of off the top of my head would have passages similar to the ones he is trying to avoid--books by Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou, etc. Can any of you think of a good substitute? Many thanks in advance.
