How about when you look up a phone number on your phone company's website, and there are two tabs: the YELLOW PAGES and the WHITE PAGES. They're not pages, nor are they yellow... Anne-Marie Gordon, Librarian Livonia Primary School Livonia, NY agordon@livoniacsd.org http://www.livoniacsd.org/primaryschool/gordon/index.htm "So please, oh PLEASE, we beg, we pray, Go throw your TV set away, And in its place you can install, A lovely bookshelf on the wall." * Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory >>> "Wee, David" <dwee@HW.COM> 05/05/06 12:35 PM >>> Hey Jeff, I have the same thought about the "Card Catalog!" No, I don't call my cell phone a telegraph, but then I also VERY RARELY ever compute anything on this thing that I keep calling a "computer." :-) Happy weekend! dave Dave Wee, Librarian Harvard-Westlake Middle School 700 North Faring Road Los Angeles, California 90077 Phone -- (310) 288-3270 E-mail -- dwee @ hw dot com "You see, I don't believe that libraries should be drab places where people sit in silence, and that's been the main reason for our policy of employing wild animals as librarians." ~~ Monty Python ~~ -----Original Message----- From: School Library Media & Network Communications [mailto:LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU] On Behalf Of Hastings, Jeff Sent: Friday, May 05, 2006 8:00 AM To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Subject: [LM_NET] GEN: Why is it called OPAC? And: Should I switch to decaf? *********************** This message has been scanned for viruses by the InterScan Messaging Security Suite. -HPS Technology ***********-*********** I'd agree that "OPAC" has a dated, punch card era, geek-wad, smarty-pants, psuedo-techno ring that's pretty embarassing. I simply call mine the "catalog." On that topic, sort of, I have this weird quirk: It really irks me when people call the catalog "The Card Catalog." I never say anything about it, but deep inside me there's this angry little guy who screams "It's NOT a CARD CATALOG; wake up, d*mmit! We haven't had a card catalog in DECADES! Look closely: Do you SEE any CARDS!? NO!!! Do you refer to your cell phone as as TELEGRAPH!! No! So STOP IT with the CARD CATALOG already! ...Should I tell my shrink about this? Jeffrey Hastings School Librarian Highlander Way Middle School hastingj@howellschools.com http://www.howellschools.com/~hwmedia/content/library.html -----Original Message----- From: School Library Media & Network Communications [mailto:LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU] On Behalf Of Gray, Patricia Sent: Friday, May 05, 2006 8:41 AM To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Subject: [LM_NET] GEN: Why is it called OPAC? *********************** This message has been scanned for viruses by the InterScan Messaging Security Suite. -HPS Technology ***********-*********** Greetings and Happy Friday! Is OPAC a Follett term or a general term? I am asking because the VA SOLs refer to it as an on-line library catalog. So, I will now refer to is as the on-line library catalog instead of just "the computer". :) TIA! Patricia H.
