Here are the suggestions you all made with the person included. I
thought this was topic that no one would mind having their identifiers
with and sometimes that may help you judge the applicability for you in
your situation. Thanks you all - I got many great ideas as usual. You
will see some things suggested more than once - I left it as is, so you
can judge the enthusiasm for a particular work.

Hi, Becky--I'd recommend the fairly recent anthologies edited by either
Liz Rosenberg or Naomi Shihab Nye as appropriate for your high school
students. I especially like _This Same Sky_ (Nye) and Rosenberg's
_Earth-Shattering Poems_, _The Invisible Ladder_, and _Light-Gathering
Poems_. They've edited others, too.

Good luck!

Hi all, I'd add Martin Espada and Harryette Mullen to your list. I also
might add the book "Tar" by C.K. Williams and "What Work Is" by Phillip
Levine.

I like Betsy Franco's anthologies of teenage poetry,

Things I Have to Tell you: Poems and Writing by Teenage Girls

You Hear Me? Poems and Writing by Teenage Boys

I second the recommendations for Naomi Shihab Nye's various collections
of poetry. I particularly like "I Feel a Little Jumpy Around You" and
"19 Varities of Gazelle".

I recommend a book called An Invitation to Poetry. Admittedly, I
haven't personally seen it, but I was at a conference this weekend, and
the gentleman who compiled the poems, Rober Pinsky, spoke. Its a really
neat idea. Basically, while he was a Poet Laureate, people sent him
letters of their favorite poems. These have been compiled, along with
the letters, into this volume. There is also a really neat companion
DVD of the people who selected the poems (just regular people)
explaining what the poem means to them, and then reciting the poem.
These video segements are available online, along with lesson plans,
etc. Go to http://www.favorietpoem.org <http://www.favorietpoem.org/> .

Its a pretty neat resource and I think a great way to teach poetry
appreciation.

Becky,

Check with your English teachers to see what they recommend. They may
have specific authors they like students to read. They may also be able
to help you know which poets are more popular in your area.

Are they looking for author-specific poetry or genre or ethnic? I have
two teachers that require students to find poetry regularly. I've tried
to get a variety, but budget doesn't allow for a lot. Here are a few
titles that I have. Hopefully, something will work for you.

10 varieties of gazelle by Naomi Shihab Nye

It's raining pigs & noodles by Jack Prelutsky

A kick in the head

Laughing out loud, I fly by Juan Felipe Herrera

Math talk by Theoni Pappas

Poetry matters by Ralph Fetcher

A poke in the I

The Rose that grew from concrete by Tupac Shakur

Science verse by Jon Scieszka

A slow flash of light by Jack Collom

Song of the water boatman by Joyce Sidman

Spectacular science

Author-related collections -- Walt Whitman, Dickinson, Emerson, Langston
Hughes, Frost, Dylan Thomas, Angelou, Sandburg, Plath, Longfellow

Just about any kind of anthology that offers variety also works.

Hopefully, something helps here.

Barbara
