This year my principal has given me exactly the same schedule as the PE, art, and music teachers, so I have exactly the same amount of planning time that they do. Fortunately, he is new and is open to alternatives for next year (however, please don’t respond if you have a totally flex schedule, because that is not a possibility at this point at our school). I am hoping to see students on a fixed schedule four days a week with the fifth day open for meeting collaboratively with teachers, flex scheduling some classes, and administering the library. I would like to hear from elementary librarians who are at schools with 450 to 500 students who are on a mostly fixed schedule but have some time for library administration and some time for flexibly scheduled projects and/or time for collaborative planning with teachers. Please answer the following questions: 1. How many students are in your school? 2. Do your teachers have daily planning periods? 3. Who provides coverage for teachers during their planning periods? 4. Do you have a guidance counselor who provides regular guidance classes to your students? 5. Is the schedule the same every week, or do you have some type of “A” week and “B” week schedule? If so, how does it work? I’ll post a HIT.
