Thanks (again!) to all who answered! I had some requests for a hit, so
here 'tis...
__________

In Spectrum there is an option to set the next barcode number when
you're manually processing books. Just set the next number higher than
the ones you want to block off. Also, she may have sent in a barcode
range to your vendor that they can use.

<>I'm doing this from memory since I am at a new school, but I know that
when you add books, on the screen where you add the call number, there
is an option at the top to add volume numbers and set next barcode
number. <>
Hope that helps somewhat!

While in the Materials, Edit part of the program, click on Material on
the top toolbar. Then click set next number. Set that number above the
numbers that you want blocked off.

There is a Spectrum email discussion listserv which might be able to
help you. You have to call technical support to get enrolled.

I use Spectrum and do not know of a way to block off the numbers. I

just "set aside" a range of numbers for each of the major vendors that I

use. I keep a list of them ( Follett --about 4,000 numbers), Bound to

Stay Bound (1,000) Periodical uses another range. I keep a chart of all

my numbers

This may not be the best way to do it, but I set it up with Follett to
use numbers starting way ahead of where my numbers stopped. That it I
told them to start at 21000 when my numbers stopped at 19999.

What we do is choose a series of barcodes that fall way above the ones

we are using, for instance, if we are using the 30000 range we will

choose some in the 60000 range. We do write it down so we don't forget

the ones that are reserved and then give the vendors the range we have

set aside.

PS you can also go to the cataloging mode, from the top menu choose

material, then go to set next number and enter the number above the

block you have chosen to set aside.

I know of no way to "block off" the numbers, but you can set your index

so that it will start above or below that range. What I advise our

librarians in this district to do is to pick a range of numbers quite

high or very low. Then set the index in Materials Edit under the menu

Material > Set next number so that it will not interfer with that range.

As long as those numbers in the range have not been used, they can't be

"blocked". This, as far as I know, is true of all Spectrum versions

from 4.8 through 5.3.

________________

I am not sure if I understand.. do you mean you wan to reserve a block
of barcodes for orders - but be able to use other barcodes for
cataloging you do yourself? If that is what you want, then:

If you go to Material at the top of the screen, you will get a drop down
menu that says "Set next number" and "Use number xxxxx".. You can choose
that - or you can simply make note of the last number you used and go
from there.

You don't have to use the number that Spectrum gives you, as long as it
isn't being used presently.

All I've done is keep (mental) track of what vendors I've given what range of
numbers to. I didn't know that you could block them off so Spectrum doesn't use
them. I use 5 digit codes and I use 10000-29999 for original cataloging, and an
additional 10000 range for each vendor I use. (I guess I don't use a lot of vendors
though!)
