Sad to say I am not surprised.... When I was in grad school for my degree in administration (it wasn't that long ago) -- libraries weren't even in the darn books Nurses, guidance, coaches, art, music, pe -- I wrote to the publishers (no response) I also wrote to the then pres. of AASL -- no response -- This is not a new trend -- I am sad to say.... Unless we all stand up and show why we are needed -- we will be replaced --- In fact -- think about this -- If your principal has to choose between a tech coach and a media specialist -- what would they choose???? I was presenting the situation in my district that replaced LMS with educational aids (highest level of education:high school) who teach seven or more classes a day in information and technology literacy skills. After I finisihed presenting the professor stood up and told the entire class that he felt that certified library media specialist should all be replaced with public librarians because he could hire them at $12.00/hour. A colleague just told me that when the librarian retired in a nearby school, she was replaced by a science teacher with no library training whatsoever. My question to my friend was: What is it about our job that administrators think they can pull someone off the street to do the job? I think the question relates to the reason why libraries are mentioned only philosophically in the revision of the CASI standards: (provides comprehensive media services; access to a comprehensive materials collection, etc.) - a wording so vague that is nectar to the heart of an administrator who would choose to define it anyway he/she wanted. It goes back to our role in the educational process. What is it that we add to the educational process that is unique and can't be done without? I think we are still struggling with that issue and our lobbying for libraries ends up being perceived as self-serving. We need the lobbying to come also from our patrons who feel they can't do without us. floyd On Nov 28, 2006, at 8:36 PM, Josephine Dervan wrote: > Yes, the bottom line for library service in many school districts in > the US > is the cost of the librarians salaries.
