Colleagues,

It's amazing how many different people have taken credit for the "dance
like no one is watching" quote. It isn't likely to be any of the
songwriters as they are 20th century, and one of the proposed authors is
Mark Twain. However, none of the Mark Twain proponents give the name of
the work where the quote is found. A Carolinian professor has also been
given credit; however, if Twain also used it, then the prof. is also
borrowing.

The most likely answer to date is that the quote is part of an old Irish
wedding blessing. It's been handed down over the years and changed to
suit other's circumstances. I'll be keeping a close look as other
possible sources develop.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to share their knowledge and
sources.

"If you open up scripture, the Gospel according to John ... 'In the
beginning was the Word.' Although this has a very particular meaning in
Scripture, more broadly what it speaks to is the critical importance of
language, of writing, of reading, of communication, of books as a means
of transmitting culture and binding us together as a people". Barack
