Last year I started a new job in a different building. Right away I got
rid of 30 years of back magazines that had not ever been used. They
were taking up space and resources. They got shipped off to be
recycled. I did keep back issues of some titles such as Saturday
Evening Post and some other "treasures" but the majority of titles went
away.

It would be nice if my kids read magazines more than they do. If they
read more, I would buy more. A survey to the student population gave me
little information that I didn't already know.

I believe for accreditation we have to have a certain number of
subscriptions but I have no idea what that number is.

And on we go.

Hello All,

I thought that the original question was whether we needed to keep old
issues of magazines for years on end in our creepy, dusty, storage rooms
(the one I tell my students is our "dungeon where noisy student end
up")--not whether we should stop subscribing to hardcopies of magazines.

Did I miss something? I'm really hoping that there aren't libraries out
there being forced to eliminate their periodical subscriptions ...

I hope I'm not being the Chicken Little Librarian here either I'm just
curious.

Thanks,

dave

While I appreciate the debate on the merit of magazines, it makes me
cringe a little. If we stop offering pleasurable reading for students,
they will stop finding reading pleasurable. Never underestimate the
power of reading for fun!
