The recent discussion of using a wiki for database instruction sparked an idea for the creation of a Freshman Orientation Wiki for my upcoming Freshman Study Skills---a three week course that I start next week. I've created a Library Research Wiki which includes pages filled with questions that must be researched and answered by the students---in a scavenger hunt-style process. Rather than giving the students all of the information (ad nauseum) about what the library provides, I will assign them the responsibility of researching the library for basic information (hours, librarians on staff, etc.), how to use the online catalog, and what databases are offered. Students will have to complete the wiki assignment as a group---and each student must examine one of the 90 online databases and offer information about it (I will know that they have completed at least one component if all databases are covered). In addition to this wiki, students will take the TRAILS evaluation AND we will examine some "bogus" websites to determine the differences between good and bad information online. Please take a look at this wiki and give me some feedback...positive and negative. I've been working on this most of the day and night (to prepare for next week), so if you can offer any ideas, I can make changes over the weekend.
