Hi everyone! This is my first post here, though I've been lurking for a couple weeks now. I'm hoping that I can impose on your collective wisdom for some advice... I am a long-time public librarian (teen services) but have just accepted a position at a private (college-prep) high school. The school year started on Monday, but I don't begin work until the 18th of September, so I'm going to be behind from the get-go. Plus, the school has not had a librarian for over two years, so they don't really have a clear vision for the library at this time. Add to that the fact that I've never worked in a school library before, and I'm feeling just a little bit overwhelmed! Totally excited, but overwhelmed. I found lots of good ideas reading the advice for new librarians messages and searching the lm-net archives, but I'm wondering if any of you have additional insight that you'd be willing to share with me. So, what would you say are the biggest differences between public and school libraries? I plan on doing a survey of teachers, students, and administrators first thing, and I'll host an open house to get acquainted. What else can I do? What should my priorities be in the first months/the first year? What pitfalls should I watch out for? Definite do's or don'ts? Any and all advice is very, very welcome, and I'll compile messages and post them if there's interest. Thanks so much! I can already tell this group is going to be an essential resource!
