Connie,
I couldn't agree more.
In my school "free reading" means just that--any reading materials fiction,
non-fiction, magazines, etc. which kids read because they like to read.
Some teachers do seem to think free reading should be confined to fiction only. I
don't agree but then they're in charge in the classroom--all I can do is persuade!
But I've never heard of a required book title being called "free reading" and I
can't imagine any one title appealing to all students.
Anyway to get off my rant. I really suggest that anyone looking for good titles try
the YALSA website (http://www.ala.org/ala/yalsa/booklistsawards/booklistsbook.htm).
Another interesting site to look at is Flamingnet (http://flamingnet.com/) "Your
source for reviews and recommendations on past, present, and future preteen, teen,
and young adult books." The book reviews at the site are written by readers so they
can be kind of fun.

Is it a 'free reading' book if it's assigned?

My teachers are screaming for suggestions for high-interest
recreational reading. They are tired of doing the "boring classics"
and want some contemporary titles that will appeal to high school
students. One teacher has assigned Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game to
her whole class as their free reading book. The students are loving
it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
