I recently asked for Hi Lo books for middle schoolers that we already have in our collection. I have of course ordered the orca soundings books but wanted some suggestions for stuff we have. These are the responses I got. Thanks to everyone who responded Many of R.L. Stine's books would be considered hi/lo, also Paula Danziger, Jerry Spinnelli, Sharon Flake, Louis Sachar, Jon Scieska, the Bluford Series by Schraff and Langan. I don't know if books by these authors are hi/lo in a technical sense, but I've observed them to be popular with reluctant readers, and having an AR vocabulary level below 5. Anything published by Orca Currents or Orca Soundings is definitely hi/lo. I am in the process of creating a website with video booktalks aimed at attracting reluctant readers. It is still in progress, but feel free to take a look, and check back as I add more. http://www.bookwink.com You might check to see if you have Bunting's Someone's Hiding on Alcatraz Island, Avi's Wolf Rider or Devils Race . All of those are on a fourth grade level. Also, if you have any Dunc and Amos books by Paulsen, they are third and fourth. Finally, Levine's The Wish and Dave at Night are fourth.
