In Jim Trelease's "Read Aloud Handbook" he does talk about *Reading Behind
Bars (p. 129, c1995)*, he describes a program that initiated a read-aloud
(story telling / reading program) at night to help the juveniles in prison
calm their minds before bedtime. Then it moves to the adults who are in
prison and states that 82% of them are high school drop outs. Nothing
specific about grade level or reading levels of those prisoners.

The introduction of the book also notes that 60% of inmates are illiterate.
He continues with the statement, "change the graduation rate and you change
the prison population--which changes the entire climate of America. The
higher a state's high school graduation rate, the smaller its prison
population."

I have his latest edition of "Read Aloud"...but it's autographed, so I'm
sure I've hidden it from myself. If anyone else can find anything in the
"Read Aloud Handbook," let us know. I may try to dig it out...and then
check my Stephen Krashen materials ...just in case!
