I am responding to this for my wife, who is part of this list serve.

Have you looked into the PERN novels by Anne McCaffrey??

There are several strong woman characters and all of them ride good dragons.


The Harper Hall trilogy has a girl character (Menolly) who is a singer and
has multiple fire dragons as friends (these are very small - Parrot sized)

Moreta's ride is about a girl who saves all of the people (but dies in the
end...)

Most of the books in the series, starting with the earliest, satisfy this
criteria.

I have a 6th grade student who is looking for a book about a strong
girl.  However, here's the clincher- it also has to have a GOOD dragon
