Carol Simpson has challenged us to "Speak out to your administrators, teachers, boards, and communities..." <http://www.carolsimpson.com/LMC_AprilMay07_EdsNotes.pdf> Let's share how we are informing our stakeholders about the ETS ICT information and ultimately staking our claim on information literacy. I will start by sharing the three ways I have shared information relating the ETS ICT to practice and instruction in our high school library with three different stakeholder groups. 1. When the information about the test and the results were reported last November. I visited the ETS Web site and found a report on the Preliminary Findings on the ICT test. <http://www.ets.org/Media/Products/ICT_Literacy/pdf/2006_Preliminary_Fin dings.pdf> I also read an e-school news article on the test results and findings. <http://www.eschoolnews.com/news/showStoryts.cfm?ArticleID=6725> From these readings, I identified and made a list of nine areas that the test is designed to assess. I aligned and then listed lessons with collaborating teachers and projects for each of the identified skills. There were introductory, reinforcement and advanced lessons for nearly all of the skills. I also wrote a brief overview of the ICT test and the preliminary findings and and took all of this information to my principal to celebrate that our collaborative and integrated instructional information literacy program is on target to help our students succeed both now and in the future. 2. In December, at the meeting of our Principal Advisory Committee, when committee members were asked for compliments, I complimented the high school staff for working with me to help meet our students' 21st century learning needs and handed out copies of my "report" to all of the committee members. 3. Most recently, I wrote a simplified version of my findings for the March/April edition of the school district's community newsletter (required by the state). This letter is mailed to every household in the school district. The article title is "Ready & Set to Work, Learn and Live in the 21st Century!" I tried to make the article short and layman friendly. While writing I did my best to eliminate most of the jargon. An elderly neighbor helped by proofreading for readability. A copy of the article can be downloaded from: <http://www.deblogan.com/ICTarticle.doc>. While this article was written with parents and community members in mind, I am happy to report that it also caught the attention of a teacher who thanked me for mentioning him in the article. :-) Mike, thank you for starting this discussion. I am looking forward to hearing ideas from other people. -- Sincerely, Deb Logan Librarian/Media Specialist Mount Gilead High School Mount Gilead, OH MAILTO:jd3logan@bright.net http://www.deblogan.com -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law. It states many of the same concerns Deb's article did but is not quite as sanguine about the overall program of ICT skills. In my district we have a computer proficiency graduation requirement which can be met by taking a class or taking a series of computer proficiency tests<http://tamdistrict.org/instr/assessment/computers/index.htm>. There is a small component (10 multiple choice questions) about information literacy which the LMTs in the district got the administrators to add to the test. Although we certainly have an active program of teaching and learning ICT skills which we are constantly developing and our district's technology plan<http://tamdistrict.org/forstaff/tech/plan.pdf>, like all California districts' has a major section on information literacy, there is still, to my mind, a disconnect with the whole community about the way to ensure these skills are taught and learned in the district. I applaud Deb and encourage all of us to share not only lessons for teaching and assessing such skills but also strategies for getting our schools and districts to make these skills an integral part of every child's education. Sounds like you've got all the reasons you need right there, Veronica. Do= es=20 your Supt value libraries? Do you have the results of the Colorado study et al= to share? Fire away with both barrels. If he's already made up his mind, it=20 won't matter, so let him have the facts and figures. Been there and lived through that! Thank goodness I had a baby in January--otherwise I don't think I could have made it. Anyway, you need = to=20 be availabe to help students check out books-npt trapped behind the circ desk--think of how many teachable moments will be missed. Without assistants--who will keep the collection in good repair? Who will print = and hand out overdues? Keeping the library closed deprives students and=20 teachers of valuable resources. Certainly it is cheaper to pay support staff than=20 replace books that are lost and damaged because no one has time to properly maint= ain=20 the collection. What price for a child who finds a locked door when they're=20 just dying for the next book in the series? Veronica, I am a library student in my last semester of classes. One of my=20 assignments is to do an executive summary. The topic I choose is the nee= d=20 for assistants in the media center. I have not completed this assignment= =20 but I do have my annotated list of sources. I will attach it to this ema= il.=20 I hope it helps. I think everything you've listed for us to consider is a great basis to=20 start. Tell him that your students' quality of learning will suffer, read= ing=20 scores might dip (you never know..and testing is one they look at after=20 all), this is the most restrictive environment for students vs. least=20 restrictive environment. I know that's invoking special ed language, but=20 it's true. Your service to all staff and all students will suffer, books = can=20 walk out easily when a library is unsupervised, etc. These reasons are why I'm so glad that Oklahoma has a school law in place= =20 regarding LMS and schools. Depending upon student population there is eit= her=20 a combo of a part-time LMS and aide all the way up to the largest schools= in=20 the state (6A) which is what we are. There are 2 full time LMS and 1 full= =20 time library secretary in addition to student library aides every hour. T= he=20 2 of us offer full time instruction. The aides are responsible for circ, = and=20 the secretary mends books, checks out equipment, etc. He's trying to spread you too thin, and in so doing, he's shortchanging t= he=20 library. Write up a detailed description of what a typical week is like. For each day, list where you are and where each assistant is, thereby creating a chart of the times each school library is open and available for the students. Then, create a separate list/chart showing the minimal hours each school library would be open without the help of your assistants. This boggles my mind! If they do not understand the difference between 2, 1, or 0, they sound hopeless. Just list the things you will be able to do with 2, 1, and 0, and the amount of access children will have to the library with each. And make sure they understand the things you do BESIDES do classes and check out books. A lot of people are under the impression that books fall out of the sky, onto the shelf, ready to check out.... Hi Veronica, Use the strategic planning document to outline exactly what you and your personnel do. Can be quite confronting! Include everything. Please recognise the copyright. You probably have already accessed these, but if not, they could provide = you=20 some ammunition: =20 http://www.nmla.org/NM_Task_Force_for_School_Library_Standards_RevMar04. p= df =20 and http://www.stlib.state.nm.us/files/NMStudyforDistribution.pdf .These = two=20 are just NM.
